Some guy on the Buell forums just torqued his oil filter bolts to 97 foot pounds. (this bike has a cartridge filter, not a screw on filter)
the manual/vid called for 97 INCH pounds... it was his first time using a torque wrench
BRB dying of laughter
Bike in question

I feel like he’d notice something was up when the oil filter begins twisting like a candy wrapper.

the 1125 motor uses a cartridge filter, not a screw on filter.

Everyone knows it should be 97 yard pounds.

I feel bad for the guy, because I can easily see myself making that exact mistake.

...how did they not strip? Or break the head of the bolt?

I think ONE of them them broke.
I’m actually kinda impressed tbh.

Sometimes it’s painful to read those posts, because you can’t interrupt them and tell them to stop.
Had old leaky valve cover gaskets and wanted to change them. Found out that you had to remove the upper intake and that where the problem started. Besides being a pain in the a$$ to remove, I accidentally dropped a vacuum hose clamp down the #1 cylinder lower intake port. Being too lazy to fish it out,
No. Tell me you didn’t...
I just bolted everything back together and started it up
hoping that things would be okay. WRONG!!! Now I failed smog, hear valve train noise and have low compression on that cylinder.

Haha damn not everyone has much common sense huh. “Wow my oil filter goes on tighter than the rear axle nut? Sounds ok to me! “

ouch.......

thats what I was thinking....my rear axle is 72...and I saw 97 for something concerning the OIL FILTER. WTF

I once torqued a 10mm bolt on a honda to like 90 foot lbs before
I could feel the bolt flexing through the wrench

Ah, so he probably locked the cartridge away forever.

I wonder what sort of wrench he was using because it seems like 97lbs. requires more than a little effort with a normal length handle.

I’m actually kind of impressed he was even able to torque the bolts to anywhere near 92 ft-lb. On my Suzuki, the soft cheese from which the engine cases are manufactured would have stripped out before the actual in-lb factory spec.

97 inch pounds is 8ft-lbs.

Its a Harley so what is the big deal? The black smoke and chugging of the thing will just make it more authentic. Right???

I once broke a bolt inside my DR’s engine at 6 ft-lb. To be fair, the case threads didn’t strip, I guess. There’s no way in heck I could come close to 90+ ft-lb on any engine bolt without stripping threads or breaking bolts, though! I’d be even be nervous about torquing the axle nut that much.

God has a sense of Humor. This is one of his gifts to you after your rough patch.

no actually. the 1125 is a rotax motor. your thinking of the older XBs

I am aware that it was a Rotax. It’s the easy shot though. And now it runs like a Harley ;)
BTW I started ordering replacement parts tonight. May be back in business this year!
